Camp Code of Conduct
Here at Camp Woody we are dedicated to providing an excellent summer camp experience for our campers. To accomplish this goal, campers are expected to behave appropriately and promote a safe, fun and healthy environment. We ask that all campers and parents/guardians read this code together before arriving at camp.
As a camper, I will:
Be respectful, cooperative and contribute positively to the experience of fellow campers.
Be careful and considerate that my actions do not hurt another camper’s feelings or hurt them physically, either intentionally or accidentally.
Show respect to the camp staff, and cooperate fully with their instructions at all times.
Treat others with courtesy and consideration.
Be respectful of others property including camp property and equipment/supplies.
Conduct myself responsibly. I understand that horseplay, inappropriate touching, unwelcome teasing/bullying or any unkind behavior is not allowed and will not be tolerated.
Communicate in an appropriate manner, which means I will not use foul language, gestures, or harsh words. I will not raise my voice, or use verbal threats of any kind.
Refrain from deliberately causing bodily harm to campers or staff. I understand that pushing, kicking, hitting or fighting is not acceptable behavior and is grounds for suspension/dismissal from the camp program.
As a camper, I understand that:
I need to pay attention to my surroundings and use care in all activities.
I need to adhere to all safety rules and regulations given for each camp activity including remaining in the designated area.
I am expected to wear appropriate clothing while at camp.
I must inform camp staff if I am experiencing a problem with another camper or am having other issues.
I will be encouraged to participate in camp activities to the best of my ability.
Camp Woody is an electronics free camp and I will either leave my electronic devices (including all cellular devices) at home or turn them in to my counselor at the start of camp. Any devices turned in will be securely stored and returned at the end of camp.
The possession or use of illicit drugs, alcohol, tobacco or vape products are strictly prohibited and grounds for immediate expulsion from camp.
Levels of staff response
Level 1 - First Occurrence
Behaviors that lead to a level 1 response: Group Disruption, inappropriate language, putting safety at risk, etc.
Level 1 Staff Response: Camper will be asked to change their behavior. The Camper will not be excluded, however, they will be provided an opportunity to think about their actions.
Level 2 - Second Occurrence (or dealing with a more severe issue)
Behaviors that lead to a level 2 response: Unwelcome teasing, inappropriate or abusive language, destruction or abuse of personal property, endangering him/herself or others, etc.
Level 2 Staff Response: Behavior and staff response will be documented. The Camper will be removed from the group setting for a period of time. The Camp Director or Assistant Director will be brought in to the conversation. After spending time away from the group to calm down, discussing the issue, and agreeing on how to best move forward, the Camper will be welcomed back to the group.
Level 3 - Third Occurrence (or dealing with a very severe event)
Behaviors that lead to a level 3 response: Directed bullying, aggressive body contact, violence, theft, directed inappropriate or abusive language, other repeated behavior as listed previously, etc.
Level 3 Staff Response: Behavior and staff response will be documented. Camp Director and/or Assistant Director will remove the camper from the group for a discussion on what happened. Situation will be addressed on a case by case basis and actions could range from sitting out during camp activities to being sent home.
Removal from camp
Some children have needs that are beyond the scope of Camp Woody staff training and environmental structure. If we find that we are not able to properly meet a camper’s needs, or if we determine that Camp Woody is not the best environment for a camper, we may choose to send them home from camp.
While this decision could be based on the camper exhibiting multiple, unchanged behavioral issues, it could also be because a child is not interacting well with their peers, is not ready to be away from their primary caregiver for the week, has developmental needs that our staff is not equipped to meet, is unable to adapt to our environment, or any other number of non-behavioral related issues that we have seen arise over the years. We do not take removing a child from camp lightly and only do so when we feel it is in the child’s best interest, or necessary for the safety or operation of the camp.
When the decision to send a child home from camp has been made, the primary caregiver will be contacted and arrangements will be made for the camper to be picked up at the dock in Kodiak as soon as it is possible.
